Hakoa he iti, he pounamu – Although small, it is a treasure

Hakoa he iti, he pounamu – Although small, it is a treasure

Some things in life are small, but hold a depth of meaning far beyond their size.

A whispered memory, a gentle touch, the last cup of tea shared with a loved one.

These moments, fleeting yet rich, are the pounamu of our lives—treasured, carried close, and passed down.

This whakataukī - hakoa he iti, he pounamu - has always resonated deeply with me.

It reminds me that value isn’t measured by scale but by significance.

It is the essence of my journey, my mahi, and my jewellery.

Every piece I create at Timmy Smith is infused with this belief—small in form but weighted with intention, story, and connection.

Jewellery has always been more than adornment.

It is a vessel, a storyteller, a way to hold something sacred close to you.

When I craft a piece, I am thinking of the hands that will wear it, the heart it will sit near, and the stories it will absorb.

In the same way that a single drop of tea can hold the essence of the whole leaf, a single pendant, a single ring can carry a lifetime of meaning.

Timmy Smith Jewellery was never meant to be about mass production or trends.

It has always been about creating objects of significance—taonga that connect people to their past, their present, and their own sense of belonging.

Whether it is a piece that honours whakapapa, a symbol of love, or a personal reminder to pause, each creation carries the same kaupapa: to honour, to hold, to treasure.

My jewellery is rooted in the idea of slowing down, of savouring what is precious.

It is about creating with intention, about crafting not just something beautiful, but something that carries the mana of the wearer.

Because in the end, it is not the size of something that matters, but the meaning it holds.

May we all take a moment to honour the pounamu in our lives, the small yet powerful treasures that shape who we are.
