Whakaruruhau - sterling silver ring
Whakaruruhau
protector, adviser, mentor
to protect, shield, shelter
It speaks of the waxing and waning of protection and how it is within us all to be whakaruruhau for others.
A piece to be worn but also gifted as a way of conveying the care and fortitude you wish for the wearer.
Background
My one and only trip to England saw me purchase two Tibetian Talismen for my two eldest girls. They were bass and beautiful and I fashioned necklaces for them to wear as a protector and shield from the ills of this world.
Their shape and form always fascinated me and I have since then, tried to find a way of honouring their function, without stumbling into cultural appropriation.
This ring takes the essence of these taonga and create its own.
